The present article summarizes an article by journalist Nicholas D. Kristof on mortality due to unhealthy water, unsanitary sewage disposal, living in slum dwellings, poverty, diarrhea, parasitic diseases, and the lack of medical facilities in Cambodia and India. The narrative was based on the author's field observations and short interviews with people. This article was published in The New York Times on January 9, 1997. The author first mentions socioeconomic problems and and unsanitary living conditions, especially lack of access to safe sanitary water and unsanitary sewage disposal, diarrheal diseases, and parasites. He then states the measures taken and their effect and finally considers safe water and education as the solutions to get out of the situation. This article was read by Bill Gates and his wife and stimulated Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to prioritize water and sanitation problems in poor countries. Thus, we decided to publish a Persian summary of this article.
