Governing Multi-Stakeholder Innovation Networks: a Value Co-Creation and Capture Process Framework

Developing innovative solutions for the complex societal problems of our time challenges traditional management practices as a more open, collaborative approach is required. In this setting, multiple, diverse organizations are compelled to collaborate in innovation networks and co-create value for themselves and others. The governance and organization of these networks raises new questions as different processes and outcomes become more relevant in this dynamic multi-stakeholder environment in which multiple interests come into play. Using grounded theory principles, we explored these aspects in a public-private partnership in which 57 different organizations were involved. Taking the number and diversity of stakeholders into account, we gained insights into the network- and stakeholder-level processes through which value is co-created and captured as well as the unique types of value outcomes that accrue to the network and its participants.
