Mental health considerations for immigrants of Arab/MENA descent

Abstract This chapter presents issues related to immigration for Arab/Middle Eastern North African (MENA). A description of the MENA population is presented along with chronicling of the three established waves of immigration. An emerging fourth wave of immigration comprised primarily of refugees from Somalia, Iraq, Syrian Arab Republic, and the Sudan is also presented. Reasons for migration, acculturation processes, and factors related to acculturative stress are discussed. MENA immigrant’s experiences related to discrimination at multiple levels and issues related to identity and recognition are also presented in the chapter.
