Electric-Energy Savings using 3.3 kV Full-SiC Power-Modules in Traction Applications

2020
This work discusses the benefits of a 3.3 kV Full-SiC power module in a commuter-train traction inverter. The focus is on the electric-energy savings. Firstly, a representative electric load profile for a commuter train is derived. It is based on a typical commuter-train drive cycling and realistic operating conditions of the electrical drive. Based on this load profile, the electric-energy loss in the traction inverter is evaluated for a state-of-the-art silicon IGBT module and a SiC MOSFET module. For a fair comparison, both modules utilize the same package dimensions and have similar current ratings. The SiC module saves 59 % of the electric-energy loss. Finally, this is related to the monetary savings, utilizing historical and present electricity prices for German industry and railway.
