How very Brighton

2011
The development of the Big Lemon bus service in Brighton, UK, is described. Old buses running on recycled chip fat fuel are used at low frequencies competing with the established Brighton & Hove bus company. The Big Lemon is a community interest company partially run by volunteers which donates some of its profits to community causes voted for by visitors to its website. The step entrance buses are run on routes serving university students between Falmer and Brighton railway stations and from student halls of residence to the city centre. The buses provide private hires and trips to music festivals during university vacations. There are plans to run a minibus service into Stanmer village, which is deficient in bus services, if enough community support is forthcoming from subscriptions. During the summer break, the staff visit new organisations which may be able to provide chip fat waste oil with a view to processing the oil in its own facility.
