A photoelectric conversion element of the present invention is provided with: a photoelectric conversion section 20; and a photon upconversion layer 24, which is disposed further toward the light input side than the photoelectric conversion section 20, and which converts infrared light into light having a wavelength that is shorter than that of the infrared light, said light being in a wavelength region to which the photoelectric conversion section 20 has sensitivity.
