Deuterium permeation through multi-layer ceramic coatings under liquid lithium-lead exposure condition

2021
Abstract Corrosion of tritium permeation barrier ceramic coatings by liquid tritium breeders is an unavoidable concern in a high thermal efficiency fusion reactor. In this study, we have established a deuterium permeation measurement system under static Li-Pb exposure conditions to investigate the deuterium permeation behavior of multi-layer ceramic coatings under corrosive environments. The system successfully detected the coating degradation on the moment by measuring an irregular increase in deuterium permeation. The permeation behaviors showed that the coating degraded more seriously as the number of the interfaces between the different ceramics increased.
