The invention provides a method and apparatus for control an unmanned aerial vehicle through gestures. The unmanned aerial vehicle is provided with a camera. The method comprises the following steps: detecting the gestures in frame detection images through Viola-Jones gestures; determining whether the gestures belong to predetermined unmanned aerial vehicle controlling gestures; when it is determined that the gestures belong to the unmanned aerial vehicle controlling gestures, obtaining a movement locus of the gestures; and controlling the unmanned aerial vehicle to execute control motion corresponding to the movement locus of the gestures through the movement locus of the gestures, wherein the movement locus of the gestures and the control motion corresponding to the movement locus of the gestures are set in advance. The control motion corresponding to the movement locus is found through the movement locus of the gestures, and the unmanned aerial vehicle is controlled to execute the control motion. The movement locus of the gestures and the control motion are in one-to-one correspondence and are set in advance, such that control over the unmanned aerial vehicle through the gestures is realized, the step of controlling the unmanned aerial vehicle through operating a remote controller by a user is omitted, the method is simple and is easily implemented, and user experience is improved.
