Determination of the chirality of carbon nanotubes by electron diffraction

2007
This article reviewed the recent results on the determination of the chirality of carbon nanotubes using electron diffraction, which gives by far the most comprehensive and reliable measurement of the chirality of carbon nanotubes, both single-walled and multiwalled. Two recent advances were summarized in this articles:(a) Obtain the chiral indices(u,v) directly from the electron diffraction patterns using the scattering intensity peaks I_(l1),I_(l2),and I_(l3) on the principal layer lines l_1,l_2,and l_3,I_(l1)(πdR)∝|J_v(πdR)|~2,I_(l2)(πdR)∝|J_u(πdR)|~2,and(I_(l3)(πdR)∝|J_(u+v)(πdR)|~2);and(b) Obtain the chiral indices(u,v) from the ratio v/u which can be measured accurately from an experimental electron diffraction pattern.
