Thickness control of mesoporous silica coated on gold nanorod

Coating the gold nanorod with mesoporous silica is one of the recommended modification strategies for application of gold nanorod, and is valuable in studying the mechanism of nanoheterostructure formation. Focus on the thickness control strategy of silica coating layer, this study firstly investigated the specific effect of single experimental factor including tetraethoxysilane, gold nanorod, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and hydroxide ion. Result shows that not only a limited thickness control range of 3.5 to 26 nm was acquired, but a reverse trend of the thickness change was exhibited for different factors, indicating both a synergetic and a competitive effect of these factors in the three stages of silica coating process. Based on this understanding, a new strategy was proposed by simultaneously controlling multiple experimental factors, and an increased silica thickness of around 42 nm was obtained. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the role of a specific factor in each stage of the coating process is proposed. According to this study, not only a better strategy for the thickness control of mesoporous silica coating layer is acquired, but a much clear picture of the three-stage mechanism of silica coating mechanism is received.
