Effect of particles on lubricated friction -theoretical analysis of friction caused by particles in journal bearing

2002
From the viewpoint of energy saving, the authors performed a theoretical analysis on the effects of particles in oil (abrasive particles) on sliding friction for journal bearings. The analysis revealed that particles in oil raise the sliding friction of the journal bearing and that particle-induced friction force increases in proportion to shaft diameter and bearing length as well as the concentration of particles in oil. On the other hand, increase of clearance between the journal bearing and shaft is found to reduce particle-induced friction. Load applied to the bearing does not affect to the particle-induced friction in case of assuming that particles are embedded below the bearing surface.
