Opinions on Creative Stereoscopy

2012
In this chapter five stereographers offer their opinions on creative stereoscopy. Ray Zone, award-winning 3D film producer, discusses 3D as a kind of “repair” for “defective” 2D cinema. Yves Pupulin, founder of Binocle and a leader in European 3D, proposes notes towards a mise-en- scene for stereoscopy, comparing discontinuities in the volumetric visual arts and suggesting creative parameters for 2D cinema, 3d stereoscopy, and 3D holography. Steve Schklair, founder and CEO of 3ality Digital, explores the invention of tools for creative stereoscopy, from creating a modern theory of 3D and the modern 3D camera unit, to experimenting with the medium and developing the art of cinematographic depth. Vince Pace, 3D industry leader, founder of PACE, and Avatar collaborator, talks about the old and new film languages of 2D and 3D, from editing live 3D TV to 3D camera positions and monitoring. Bernard Mendiburu concludes with a discussion of the triple creativity challenge of the stereographic arts—technical, artistic, and scientific—from the impact of technological constraints on creativity and stereo stress as a storytelling tool, to depth placement and screen or “window” size and the 3D experience.
