X-ray streak spectroscopy of Z-pinch K-shell mass dynamics

2002
Summary form only given, as follows. We have made streaked spectroscopy measurements of K-shell x-ray emission at the SNL/Albuquerque Z facility for both nested Ni wire arrays and Ar double-shell gas puffs. By doping either of the wire arrays or gas puff shells with a different tracer, Cr or Mn in the case of the wire arrays and Cl for the gas puffs, we can determine when the mass from each is radiating in the K-shell. In general, we find that the inner array or puff mass starts emitting K-shell X rays first and stops emitting before the outer mass does. This result runs counter to a 1D picture in which the arrays do not mix and the inner array mass remains hot and dense longer than the outer array mass.
