Modeling of Full-scale Converter Wind Turbine Generator

2017
This chapter describes the operating characteristics of the full‐scale converter‐wind turbine generator (FSC‐WTG) and a FSC‐WTG model including the shaft model, generator model, and the FSC model. It analyses the stability of grid‐connected wind farms based on FSC‐WTGs against a test wind farm based on direct‐drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)‐based wind turbines. The operating characteristics of wind farms depend on the WTGs, and directly affect grid operations. The control strategies of the grid‐side converters of the FSC‐WTGs involve DC bus voltage/reactive power and DC bus voltage/AC‐side voltage of the converter. The chapter also describes the FSC control system and explores the control principle of an FSC and the model of its control system. The voltage stability of a wind farm based on FSC‐WTGs has been significantly improved by use of additional grid‐side converter control and DC‐link coupling control.
