On restorability of electricity distribution and telecommunication networks by remote operations

2018
We study joint restorability of interdependent telecommunications (optical + mobile) and electricity distribution networks after a long-term blackout. Restorability of a node in either network requires an availability of services of both networks. Simulations with a large number of randomly generated realistic network topologies and their variations indicate that restoration proportions in both networks are at the same level regardless of the internal topological robustness of the networks. In this setting, the mobile network coverage radius is a key element in restorability, and quite large a radius is needed for a complete restoration. The prediction of the restoration progress is difficult, and the complete restorability from all root nodes is costly to achieve.
