A drawback of the center of gravity readout method: the U-effect observed in positron resolution study☆

Abstract A nonuniform spatial resolution has been observed in a single wire proportional chamber equipped with a center of gravity readout system. The optimum resolution occurs at the center of anode wire. Experimental results and simulations prove that this undesirable effects is due to the method and vanishes as the signal to noise ratio is improved.
