Relationships between resilience and mental health of college students with suicidal ideation: the mediating role of coping style

Objective To explore the mediating effect of coping style between resilience and mental health of college students with suicidal ideation, so as to promote the positive effect of resilience, provide reference for preventing suicidal behaviors of college students with suicidal ideation, and improve the mental health of college students with low resilience. Methods 1170 college students in Shandong Province were investigated with Trait Coping Style Questionnaire(TCSQ), Resilience Scale Adolescent(RSCA) and General Health Questionnaire(CHQ-20) by stratified random sampling. Results(1) The detection rate of suicidal ideation was 12.70%(149).(2) College students with suicidal ideation scored lower on the resilience scale and positive coping style than those without suicidal ideation(P<0.05), and higher on the negative coping style and mental health than those without suicidal ideation(P<0.01).(3) The scores of resilience scale and positive coping style were negatively correlated with the scores of mental health(P<0.01), while the scores of negative coping style and mental health were positively correlated(P<0.01).(4) Both PC and NC played a mediating role in the effect of resilience on mental health, and the mediating effect was 62.15% of the total effect. Conclusion The coping style of college students with suicidal ideation plays a mediating role between resilience and mental health.
