Field Assessment of Ground-tool Wear Using a Multiple-coupon Device

1988
This preliminary report describes an innovative technique for measuring the wear of ground engaging tools by testing 'coupons' representative of point materials. The coupons are mounted in parallel on a device which is mounted on a chisel-plow tine-assembly in place of the regular point. Results from the first tests of this method are presented and compared with results of field tests on regular ground tools. An excellent correlation was found between the wear rates of 19 mm{2} x 5 mm thick coupons and the full size tools at the same site. The technique offers the advantages of rapidly producing representative results with lower costs for material wear tests in tillage research.
