Effects of nitric oxide and copper on marine algae growth

2008
In order to study the influence of nitric oxide(NO) and copper ion on marine algae growth,Skeletonema costatum and Gymnodinium sp.were incubated when adding different concentrations of NO and copper with different addition methods, and the preliminary functional mechanism was discussed.Experimental results showed that when adding different concentrations of NO(10-5~10-10 mol/L) only once at the beginning or twice a day during the cultivation process, marine algal growth was obviously promoted or inhibited, which showed the phenomenon of "dual effect".When adding 1.4,0.001 4 μmol/L NO only once at the beginning or 0.001 4 μmol/L NO twice a day,the algae growth was enhanced both in the natural condition and in the metal stresses, and NO could counteract the inhibition caused by copper ion during the algae growth.NO plays an important role in the regulation and control of the marine algae growth, which may be correlated with the antioxidation of the bioactive molecule NO.
