Effect of silicon application on Carosello and Barattiere (Cucumis melo L.)

2006
The aim of this research was to study the effect of silicon application into nutrient solution on yield, quality and plant resistance against powdery mildew of Carosello and Barattiere (Cucumis melo L.), two landraces of melon widespread overall in Apulia region, whose fruits are consumed unripe. Carosello confirmed to be more productive compared to Barattiere. Silicon-feed plants were less affected by powdery mildew compared to control. Relative water content of leaves was higher in treated plants without suffering further changes on membrane permeability. Among qualitative parameters herein reported, total soluble solids and dry matter were higher in Barattiere than in Carosello fruits
