Some Improvements in the GSMaP_Gauge Algorithm

2021
An accurate estimation of precipitation with high temporal and spatial resolution on a global basis are useful for not only scientific research but also flood warning, hydrological applications, weather forecast and so on. GSMaP provides global precipitation with 0.1 degree and 1 hour resolution and has been used widely in more than thousands of organizations for operational use. This GSMaP system has several products including GSMaP_ MVK and GSMaP_Gauge and the GSMaP_Gauge is the best product among them in terms of accuracy though it has the latency of a few days. In this study, some algorithm modifications in the GSMaP_Gauge algorithm are reported, focusing on the precipitation over the desert in central Australia. In the current algorithm, sometimes precipitation over desert and an artificial precipitation pattern are detected. Precipitation distribution over desert in Australia from GSMaP _MVK, GSMaP_Gauge and ground based measurement are compared in this study, and some modifications in the GSMaP_Gauge algorithm are discussed. In the new version, it is shown that the modified results show more realistic pattern and it is compared with the ground rain gauge measurements.
