A Study of the Relationship of Problem Solving and Depression for Adolescents

The purpose of this study was explore the current status of the youth problem solving and depression tendencies to learn about the differences on the youth with different background variables, and the correlation in problem solving and depression for adolescents. The measurement applied in this study included “the Problem Solving Inventory adolescent-version” and “Depression Screening Scale for Children and Adolescent”. The participants are 513 students` samples. The obtained data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation. The findings of this research were illustrated as follows: 1. Students with different ages and areas in PSI don`t achieve the remarkable difference. 2. Students with different sex in PSI and AAS achieve the remarkable difference. 3. Students with different parenting in PSC and PC achieve the remarkable difference. 4. Students with different family relationship in PSC and subscales achieve the remarkable difference. 5. All variables in Depression Screening Scale for Children and Adolescents achieve the remarkable difference. 6. There were positive correlations between PSI (including three subscales) and Depression Screening Scale for Children and Adolescents. Based on the findings, the implications and suggestions for junior high school teachers, parents and future research are also provided.
