Novel Biomimetic Design for Composite Material

2012
The article discusses the biomimetic approach for composite materials that can be applied in different industrial areas such as biomedical, aerospace, automotive, electronic, textile, and so on. The main font of inspiration to gain principles of biomimetic design, high performances, and multifunctional materials comes from the observation and study of biological materials. Infact, in the first part of the article, the microstructure and the properties of biological tissues are discussed in terms of structure-properties-functions relationship in order to understand the nature guideline useful for the design of composite materials, while in the second part, biomimetic composites defined following nature guideline are described. Some examples of biomimetic composites used for industrial applications such as biosensors, textile, and biomedical devices (prosthesis and scaffolds for tissue engineering) are reported. Keywords: biomimetic; composites; biological tissues; tissue engineering
