Short-Term Results of Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A New Preoperative Combination Therapy

1993
In order to reduce the postoperative recurrence, combination therapy of transecatheter arterial embolization (TAE) and percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) were performed for hepatocellular carcinoma (TAE+PEI group). The patients who underwent no preoperative therapy (n-Tx group) or only TAE (TAE group) were entered in this study. Postoperative recurrence rate of TAE+PEI group was significantly lower than TAE group (P<0.05). It is concluded that preoperative combination therapy of TAE and PEI for HCC improves postoperative disease free survival rate, and the PEI has an occlusive effect of portal vein which may prevent intraportal implantation during surgical manipuration.
