Incidencia de Cáncer en Cuba en el 2017

2021
Introduction: A description is provided of the extent of cancer in the year 2017, both overall and for its main locations. Objective: Describe cancer incidence in Cuba in the year 2017 by sex, age group, geographic region and location. Methods: A descriptive analysis was conducted of the new cases per year, estimating specific rates by age group, crude and adjusted by age to the global standard population per 100 000 inhabitants, according to sex, topography and province of residence. Results: A total 49 628 new cases were diagnosed in 2017, 26 244 of whom were men (52.9%) and 23 384 were women (47.1%). The age-adjusted rate was 264.9 per 100 000 for men and 232.3 per 100 000 for women. Though Havana was the province with the largest number of cases (21%), Matanzas and Villa Clara exhibited the greatest risk, with adjusted rates of 331.8 and 313.1 per 100 000 for men and 314.9 and 276 per 100 000 for women, respectively. Patients aged under 20 years were 0.8% of all new cases, whereas those aged 60 and over presented the highest rates. The leading cause of incidence for both sexes was skin cancer with 6 793 new cases for men (26%) and 6 071 for women (27%), followed by prostate cancer (17%) and lung cancer (14.4%) for men, and breast cancer (16.6%) and lung cancer (9.2%) for women. Conclusions: Cancer is an important health problem for the Cuban population. The systematic data analysis offered by the National Cancer Registry makes a substantial contribution to the evaluation of cancer control actions in each of the country's territories. Key words: incidence; cancer; cancer registry.
