Mud microloss analysis while drilling improves fractured-reservoir evaluation

2002
Most current techniques for detecting natural fractures do not differentiate clearly between fractures that allow fluid flow and those that do not. Massive or small losses of drilling mud flowing from the wellbore into surrounding formations can indicate natural-fracture permeability. The mud losses can now be processed in the time domain, improving accuracy in identifying and locating the conductive (microloss) events.
