Abstract : In December 2001, a fatal case of pneumococcal meningitis in a Marine Corps recruit was identified. The pneumococcal isolate was serotype 38, a serotype not covered by current pneumococcal vaccine formulations, This is the first report in North America of invasive disease due to this potentially emerging pathogen.
