The role of 'Core-Needle” biopsy in preoperative diagnosis of breast carcinomas

2005
In this article we review our results in using fine-needle aspiration biopsy and Core-needle biopsy in preoperative diagnosis of breast malignancies during the last eight years. An obvious and continuous increase in the number of performed “Core-needle” biopsies was observed. “Core-needle” biopsy was superior to fine-needle aspiration biopsy in accuracy of making definite diagnosis of carcinoma, in the lower rate of the reports on suspicion of malignancy and in lower false negative rate. No false positives were observed. Despite the sound results, algorithmic approach in preoperative diagnosis of breast lesions is recommended, taking in account all the clinical, radiological and morphological characteristics of the detected lesion.
