Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Edentulous Mandibulectomy Patient: A Case Report

2014
Background: The management of edentulous patients who have had radical surgery of tongue, floor of mouth and mandible is certainly one of the frustrating endeavours of maxillofacial rehabilitation. The resection of a portion of mandible causes contraction of the remaining musculature which causes medial displacement of remaining unsupported segment. The basal seat area is reduced and in lieu of this, retention, stability and support of the prosthesis are affected. This case report advocates the use of two rows of nonanatomic teeth in maxillary denture on the unresected side in a patient with hemimandibulectomy which helped in improving the masticatory efficiency because of broader occlusal table. It also served as a training device for returning the mandible to a functional position.
