Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) means how correctly a person is managing to take his/her medication. The term 'adherence' is preferable to 'compliance', as compliance implies that some prompting is necessary to ensure that the medication is taken, whereas adherence is voluntarily driven by the individual.
