A flexible, laser-defined, paper platform for localized oxygen generation and delivery

A flexible, parchment paper/PDMS based platform for local wound oxygenation was fabricated and characterized. The platform consists of a PDMS microfluidic network bonded to a parchment paper substrate. Generation of oxygen occurs by flowing H 2 O 2 through the channels and chemically decomposing it via a catalyst embedded in laser-defined regions of the parchment paper. PDMS was bonded to parchment paper using partially cured PDMS followed by air plasma, resulting in a strong bond (323 Torr). For pressures below 110 Torr the parchment paper was observed to be impermeable to water. The measured gas permeability of parchment paper was 1.42 μL/ (Torr · mm 2 · min). Oxygen generation in the catalyst spots raised the oxygen level on the opposite side of the parchment paper from atmospheric levels to 25.6%. Device and material biocompatibility with NIH 3T3 fibroblast cells was confirmed via alamar blue assays.
