THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTESTINAL METAPLASIA AND DYSPLASIA IN THE HIGHRISK POPULATION FOR GASTRIC CANCER

1998
Objective:To investigate the incidence of gastric epithelium dysplasia(DYS) in two types of intestinal metaplasia(IM) respectively and to analyse their roles in gastrocarcinogenesis. Methods: A populationbased screening for gastric precancerous lesions was conducted in Linqu county Shandong Province, one of the areas with the highest incidence of gastric carcinoma in China. 3 401 residents aged from 35 to 64 years received gastroscopical examination with biopsies taken from seven standard sites. All of bioptic specimens were studied pathologically, including study of type of IM and its relationship with DYS.Results: The prevalence rate of IM was 52.8%, DYS 20.1% in this population. The incidence of DYS in IM with small intestinal type was 33.6%, and 51% in colonic type(P0.01).Conclusion:The study indicated that in comparison with small intestinal type, DYS tended to occur in colonic type of IM with higher frequency, therefore it might be of higher risk for gastrocarcinogenesis.
