Cervical Ripening and Labor Induction

2022
Induction of labor refers to artificial stimulus for uterine contractions and is indicated when the benefits to either mother or fetus outweigh those of continuing the pregnancy. The goal of labor induction is to achieve a successful vaginal delivery always ensuring the best possible outcome for the mother and newborn. Cervical ripening methods can be applied prior to induction to increase the success of a vaginal delivery and to shorten the duration of induction when cervical status is unfavorable. Although multiple agents are available for labor induction and cervical ripening, the most commonly used methods are mechanical and pharmacologic options. Indication for induction of labor, clinical presentation, safety, and patient preference may be used in selecting the method of induction.
