Endovascular treatment of cerebral or spinal arteriovenous malformations with EVAL embolization

2009
Objective To report our experience in treatment of cerebral or spinal arteriovenous malformations(AVMs)using a new liquid embolic material,EVAL(Success Inc.,Shandong,China).Method From July 2006 to December 2007,EVAL was used to treat 20 cases of cerebral AVMs and 3 cases of spinal AVMS.The malformations in 8 cases were located in functional areas,8 cases in deep cerebral areas,4 cases in cerebellar hemispheres, one case in cervical spinal cord, one case in thoracic cord, and one ease in lumbar cord. The size of AVMs was smaller than 3 cm in 7 cases,3~6 cm in 10 cases, and larger than 6 cm in 6 cases. Results Nidus occlusion was complete in 3 cases,>90%in 5 cases,50%~90%in 11 cases,and<50%in the remaining 4 cases. There were two transient postoperative neurological deficits. There was no microcatheter glued to the injection sites. Conclusions Because of its non-adhesive function,EVAL is a safety and satisfactory embolic material in the treatment of cerebral and spinal AVMs. Key words: Arteriovenous malformations;  Endovascular treatment;  Non-adhesive liquid embolic agent; EVAL
