Electroglottography (EGG) Patterns can Predict the Type of Glottic Chink

2019
Human beings have appreciated the importance of voice for many centuries. Voice is an important component that imparts the self-confidence and socially acceptable behavior of an individual. The quality of the voice is an essential component of the social wellbeing. Quality of voice is prone to get affected because of its over use or misuse. The extent of damage caused to the laryngeal structures due to vocal abuse is a necessary domain to be examined. Various assessment methodologies have undergone a drastic transition in their potential and efficacy of diagnosing the status of laryngeal structures. Electroglottography (EGG) is one such noninvasive and widely used vocal assessment tool that aids speech-language pathologists to infer the status of vocal fold closure. Earlier, the presence and absence of the glottal gaps were detected through EGG. However, the different EGG patterns provide us with information on the shape or/and types of glottal gap/ glottic chink. The present study examines the various patterns of EGG and attempts to correlate with different types of glottic chink with evidence of videostroboscopy findings.
