59 Introduction Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric illness, afflicting approximately 1% of the population worldwide (1). As is clear from a review of the characteristic symptoms and impairments of schizophrenia, this disorder is multiply handicapping, impacting on all aspects of life functioning. Schizophrenia remains a debilitating disorder despite the development of drug treatments (2).
