Effects of kyphoplasty on ache, activity and pulmonary function

2008
objective To investigate the effect on post-operative ache, activity and pulmonary function and radiographic results in aged female patients who suffered from osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture in thoracolumbar after trans-pedicle balloon Kyphoplasty. Methods Twenty-one cases of osteoporotic thoracolumbar vertebral compression fractures were treated. The patients were women with an average age of 71.3 years(ranged,63~87years). The fractures included 21 vetebrae totally and there are all single vetebrae fracture of cancellous bone. Preoperative and postoperative symptom level, complications and radiographic findings were recorded. Vertebral body height、local kyphotic angle, pain scores、mobility scores and pulmonary function were measured for all patients,VC、FVC、MVV、TLC and FEV1.0 were selected as the parameters of pulmonary function. The outcomes of the study were analyzed by software of SPSS 12.0,using paired t-test. Results ALL 21 patients tolerated aperative procedure well. All the indexes of pulmonary function were increased significantly after the operation, and showed significant different between preoperstive and postoperstive(P0.01). the improvement of the mobility scores has positive correlation with the decrease of pain scores. Conclusion Trans-predicle balloon Kyphoplasty can significantly release pain,as well as improve sagittal alignment and mobility for aged women suffered from osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures in thoracolumber segment. Meanwhile VC、FVC、MVV and TLC are improved. three month later, the results of Kyphoplasty are stable.
