A Case of Brain Metastasis from Salivary Duct Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland

Abstract Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare, aggressive salivary gland tumor with a high risk of developing distant metastases. In this case report, we present a rare case of a 61-year-old man with brain metastasis in the left frontal lobe from SDC in the parotid gland. He had undergone right superficial parotidectomy for SDC of the right parotid gland 4years ago. He presented to our hospital because of progressive right hemiparesis. A head computed tomography (CT) revealed a mass in the left frontal lobe with peripheral enhancement on contrast-enhanced CT. We carried out a craniotomy and complete resection of the mass. Pathological findings were consistent with metastasis from SDC. The patient received radiation therapy for the cavity of brain metastasis and has continued chemotherapy with paclitaxel and trastuzumab. No recurrence was observed at 18 months postoperatively. In this current study, we report this unique case and review the literature about brain metastasis of SDC.
