ESPI Images Denoising Based on Improved Total Variation

2019
Image denoising is a key step for image processing. The real electronic speckle pattern interference (ESPI) fringe pattern contains massive speckle noise, which can affect the image quality. To solve the problem of staircase effect and reduce the speckle noise, a new method for ESPI image denoising, which is an improved adaptive total variation (TV) denoising method based on the block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) algorithm, is proposed. This method combines the advantages of BM3D denoising method and adaptive TV elimination staircase effect. The image which has been smoothed by the BM3D as the new fidelity item is used and combined with the adaptive total variation denoising model to denoise the electronic speckle interference fringe pattern. Experiment results show that the proposed method has better noise filtering effect and the structure of the speckle fringe pattern is well maintained. Thus the appearance of the staircase effect can be reduced and the details, texture and edge information of the image can be preserved at a large level.
