Exploring approaches to the administration of a long-term care facility: The application of a community planning and development process.

This article outlines the approaches taken to the management of two long-term care facilities by the County of Huron in southwestern Ontario in 1994. Lay-offs, a move to new facilities, loss of local political confidence, changes in key administrative personnel and low staff morale prompted the county to ask an interim administrative team to develop and implement an appropriate response. The article explains how community development and planning principles and techniques were applied to the management of the homes to achieve an overall improvement in communication, staff morale and attitude. These approaches may prove helpful to other administrations facing major change. Cet article expose les grandes lignes des approches adoptees en 1994 par le Comte de Huron, dans le sud ouest de l'Ontario, pour gerer deux etablissements de soins de longue duree. Des mises a pied, un demenagement, la perte de confiance politique au niveau local, des changements au sein du personnel cadre de l'administration et une baisse du moral au sein du personnel ont incite le comte a mandater une equipe administrative par interim pour elaborer et mettre en place une solution adequate. L'article explique comment le developpement communautaire ainsi que les principes et techniques de planification ont ete appliques a la gestion de foyers pour ameliorer la communication generale, ainsi que le moral et l'attitude des employes. Ces approches pourraient ětre utiles a d'autres administrations qui subissent un changement important.
