2005
Objective: To evaluate the use of a soy beverage in infants with cow's milk allergy (CMA), considering all nutritional aspects and the development of soy allergy. Methods: Twelve CMA patients with 1 to 4 years old received soy beverage and were subjected to clinical, labo- ratory and nutritional assessment during 12 months. Soy formula samples were evaluated by ELISA technique to detect protein fractions 2S, 7S and 11S, considered as the main soy allergens. Results: The soy beverage was accepted by 10 patients, with a good adherence to the treatment, adequate growth regarding weight and height and with the need calcium supplementation. Clinical and laboratory findings associa- ted to soy allergy were not detected, even at the presence of allergenic soy fractions in the product. Conclusion: Soy beverage may be used as a dietetic al- ternative in children with CMA above one year of age under medical and nutritional follow-up to ensure adequate caloric and calcium daily intakes.
