Combined wastewater overflows (cwo) re main one of the most neglected sources of microbial contamination of surface waters. This overflow condition is a result of using the same network of interceptor sewers to convey normal wastewater and stormwater runoff. In times of heavy runoff, the capacity of the in terceptors is often exceeded, particularly in highly-developed sections of older metropoli tan areas. The traditional solution to this overloading has been to divert a fraction of the combined domestic wastewater and stormwater
