Skid resistance of wearing courses of II order roads from the aspect of resistance to polishing of aggregates

2017
Wearing course of flexible pavement is built of asphalt concrete, stone mastic asphalt or some other asphalt mixture. Aggregates in this mixture should possess, among other things, appropriate resistance to polishing, in order to contribute to the overall skid resistance of pavement. In this paper the requirements for minimum polished stone value of aggregates (PSV) are outlined for some European countries, Serbia and its surrounding countries. Also, the skid resistance assessment of national road - IIA class Topola 1 - Bucin Grob is provided. According to measurements of skid resistance (SRT) and the texture depth, the assessment ranges from skid resistant to slippery. This section is planned for rehabilitation in 2016. In order to raise traffic safety awareness, it is suggested for rehabilitation designs to define polished stone value higher than PSV30 for roads with medium traffic load. This would lead to the selection of aggregates with rougher texture for surfacing of regional roads. That is particularly important for roads with medium traffic load where the limestones were used during the construction of wearing courses.
