Features of the diagnosis and course of asthma in young military personnel

SummaryThe purpose of the work was to determine the features of diagnosis and course ofasthma in young servicemen.Material and methods. We analyzed 67 medical records of patients with asthma,male, who were examined and treated in the Pulmonology Clinic of the NationalMilitary Medical Clinical Center «Main Military Clinical Hospital» in 2017-2019.Patients were allocated to two groups: Group 1 included 33 conscripts and cadets of theMinistry of Defense of Ukraine, the average age of patients – (23.6±2.8) years; Group 2included 34 contract servicemen and officers, whose average age was (25.5±2.1) years.The groups were randomized by age and sex. All patients from group 1 were consideredfit for military service before conscription.Results and discussion. A comprehensive clinical and functional examination ofyoung servicemen, who were treated in the Pulmonology Clinic in 2017-2019, foundthat in Group 1 persistent mild asthma was diagnosed in 21 patients (63.6%),intermittent asthma – in 11 patients (33.3%), and 1 patient (3.03%) had persistentasthma of moderate severity. All servicemen of this group were declared unfit formilitary service. In Group 2 persistent asthma of mild severity was found in 24 patients(70.6%), intermittent asthma – in 7 patients (20.6%), and 3 service men (8.8%) hadpersistent asthma of moderate severity.Conclusions. Among conscripts, who were sent for examination, treatment andmilitary medical examination, persistent asthma of mild severity was found in mostcases (63.6%), and intermittent asthma – in other 33.3%, which requires their releasefrom the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, patients had asthma symptoms beforebeing drafted into the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 57.6% of cases, which indicates theneed for more meticulous examination of conscripts. Persistent asthma of mild severitywas also predominant (in 70.6% of cases) in young servicemen of contract service andofficers, and intermittent asthma was presented in 20.6% of cases.
