Yoon, Kwang Seok, Ryu, Yong-Uk, Bae, Deok Won and Kim, Hyung-Jun, 2011. Two- and Three-dimensional Hydraulic Model Tests of Sluice-Conveyance for a Tidal Power Plant Design. Journal of Coastal Research, SI 64 (Proceedings of the 11th International Coastal Symposium), – . Szczecin, Poland, ISSN 0749-0208 In the present study, two- and three-hydraulic model tests are carried out to investigate the sluice conveyance of a tidal power plant. Since the tidal power plant tested in this study is of ebb generation barrage type, the tidal barrage allows water flow into the bay through sluices for power generation during the flood tide period. Thus, the sluice conveyance is of significant importance for the power generation efficiency. This study focuses on sluice conveyance estimated using two dimensional and three dimensional models. From comparisons of the water discharge between the 2D and 3D experiments, it is found that there is significant difference and the geography features and interference simulated in the 3D experiment cause the difference. The three dimensional influence such as the geographical interference on the discharge is also confirmed from the approaching flow pattern in the sea and the water discharge of all the sluices. The compared results show that a 3D estimation considering geometry features is necessary to avoid an over- or under-estimated design. In addition, the sluiceconveyance for a reverse flow direction, i.e. the discharging phase during the ebb tide period, is also examined. The comparison of the water discharge with that in the sluicing phase shows that the sluice conveyance of the reverse direction is favorable for environmental protection of mudflat.
