A Dual-Band Antenna Design for 5G Smartphone Applications

2018
A novel design of smartphone antenna formed by twelve identical monopole antenna elements for future fifth-generation (5G) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) applications is proposed in this paper. In order to obtain good performance, each antenna element has the same structure comprised of a longer L-branch and a shorter L-branch, and each of these elements is fed by an independent feeding point. The longer L-branch and the shorter L-branch can support a lower band (3300–3600 MHz) and an upper band (4800–5000 MHz), respectively. The proposed antenna can be implemented on the frames of the side edges, using a FR4 substrate with an overall size of 150 × 75 × 0.8 mm3. The simulation results show desirable S parameters and radiation performances across the operating frequency bands, indicating that the proposed antenna array is suitable for 5G mobile communication.
