Women's conditions occurring in men: breast cancer, osteoporosis, male menopause, and eating disorders.

2004
Disorders commonly thought to occur in women are being diagnosed in men more frequently. Although the percentage of men afflicted with breast cancer, osteoporosis, male menopause, and eating disorders, are far fewer than those found in women, these conditions play a significant role in the morbidity and mortality of men. Women have been the focus of research for most of these conditions for decades, with a paucity of attention to the significance, prevention, and treatment of these conditions in men [1,2]. With an aging population and an increase in obesity within the United States, problems associated with these disorders frequently appear in the clinical and hospital setting. This article addresses the role of nursing in the early recognition and treatment of these conditions. The topics presented focus on nursing interventions to prevent functional decline, improve quality of life, and provide patient education to improve knowledge and self-care for the management of these conditions.
