Primary Fallopian Tube Carcinoma:A Clinical Analysis of 25 Patients

2008
Objective:To analyze the clinicopathologic features and treatment of primary fallopian tube carcinoma (PFTC).Methods:Twenty-five patients with PFTC treated at our hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Results:The mean age of these patients was 55 years. Eighteen(72%)were menopausal women. The most common clinical situation was pelvic mass(23, 92%), followed by abnormal vaginal bleeding(10,40%), vaginal discharge(9,36%), and abdominal pain(9,36%). Histology showed serous adenocarcinoma in 20 (80%), mixed adenocarcinoma in 3 (12%), and endometrioid adenocarcinoma in 2 (8%) patients. Cytologic grading was poor differentiation in 17(68%), poor-to-moderate differentiation in 5(20%), and moderate differentiation in 3(12%) patients. FIGO stages: 1 patient in stageⅠ, 3 in stageⅡ, 17 in stage Ⅲ, and 4 in stage Ⅳ.Conclusions:Primary fallopian tube carcinoma is a rare gynecologic malignancy that has various and nonspecific presentations. Preoperative diagnosis of the disease is extremely rare. Patients are often diagnosed at advanced stages. Surgery and chemotherapy are main therapy for this disease.
