SEGMENTAL AND CABLE-STAYED BRIDGES
2002
The flexible design of segmental bridges allow them to address specific challenges of a given bridge site, from environmentally sensitive areas to those serving as second-level roadways to relieve congestion in urban areas. Segmental concrete bridges can be either precast or cast-in-place. Precast bridges involve the assembly of concrete segments match-cast under factory-like conditions. They are later erected as part of the bridge structure and the segments are post-tensioned together using high-strength steel cables to complete the spans. Segmental bridges offer various shapes, color and concrete textures, which can aesthetically enhance an environment. This article provides a brief overview of the benefits and applications of segmental bridges. Numerous photographs included in the article illustrate the versatility of these bridges.
