National survey demonstrates significant variation in suture use for dermatologic procedures.

2020
Various factors influence the choice of surface suture material, including perceived effects on cosmetic outcome, cost and patient satisfaction. Existing suture trials are of poor quality, are under-powered and have a high risk of bias.(1) We aimed to ascertain current practice of epidermal surface sutures through a survey of UK dermatologists and plastic surgeons. We did not address suture technique or dermal suture use. The survey questions were developed, reviewed and pilot-tested prior to going live (Table 1). Google Forms was used as a survey platform for electronic distribution to the British Society for Dermatological Surgery and the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons.
